World Heritage in China
Foreword
In the south-eastern part of Asia, there is a piece of beautiful
land resembling a rooster heralding the break of day. It is
none other than China one of the ancient countries in the world
Covering an area of 960 million square meters with a population
of more than 12 billion, China encompasses a wide variety of
natural environments and resources. Besides, it boasts many
amazing natural scenic spots, including the Four Marvelous Natural
Spectacles ( "Mountain and Water in Guilin", "Three Gorges on
the Yangtze River", "Stone Forest in Yunnan" and "Rime in Jilin")
and a series of world-known tourist attractions, such as Jiuzhaigou
and Yellow Dragon Cave in Sichuan, Wulingyuan in Hunan.
China is a great country with a record history of more than
live thou sand years. Because of its long history and its weaIth
and colourfulness, Chinese cuIture has always held out exceptional
attractions to the world. For example, the four great inventions
(the compass, gunpowder, papermaking and printing) by the labouring
people of ancient China are, no doubt, significant contributions
of the Chinese nation to world civilization. As for many other
cultural gems, such as the brilliant products in the field of
architecture, gardening, painting, bronze, ceramics and silk,
they are another unique contributions by China to the rest of
the world. And now, 21 heritage sites including the Great Wall,
the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven were honoured for
addition to UNESCO world heritage list.
