1. The Great Wall

The Great Wall is a gigantic defensive project whose beginning can be traced as far back as the 7th century BC. After Qin Shi Huang (the First Emperor of the Qin) (249-209 BC) unified China, he began to connect and extend the fortifications in order to guard against invasion by nomadic tribes in the north. In the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)18 large-scale renovations were carried out.

Starting from Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu Province in the West, the Great Wall runs through six provinces and one municipality and finally reaches into the sea at Shanhaiguan Pass in Hebei Province in the east, ranging 6,700 kilometres. Most of the Great Wall renovated during the Ming Dynasty remains in reasonably good condition today. Known as one of the world's wonders, the Great Wall was added to the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1987.
